Emotional Intelligence (EQ) Test
Test your emotional intelligence — the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in yourself and in the people around you.
Questions measure three components of EQ: emotional self-awareness, empathy toward others, and social skills in everyday interactions.
EQ is increasingly seen as just as important as IQ for how well life actually goes — see where your strengths lie.
About the Test
This assessment consists of 12 statements and takes about 6 minutes to complete. For each one, you'll say how often it reflects how you typically think, feel, or behave — from "Never" to "Always." At the end, you'll see three separate scores covering emotional self-awareness, empathy, and social skills, rather than a single combined number, so you can see where your strengths and blind spots actually are.
What Is Trait Emotional Intelligence?
"Emotional intelligence" became a household term after psychologist Daniel Goleman's 1995 book popularized the idea that managing emotions well matters as much as raw cognitive ability. Since then, researchers have split the concept into two distinct strands. Ability EI, developed by psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey, treats emotional intelligence like a cognitive skill — measured with tasks that have objectively correct answers, similar to an IQ test. Trait EI, the framework this quiz draws on, was introduced by psychologist K.V. Petrides at University College London. It treats emotional intelligence as a set of self-perceived tendencies — how you see your own typical emotional functioning — measured through self-report questionnaires rather than performance tasks.
This distinction matters for how to read your results. A trait-based test like this one reflects how you perceive and describe your own emotional habits, not an objective, clinically validated measurement of emotional ability. Think of it as a tool for reflection, not a diagnosis.
How Is EQ Measured?
Most trait EI questionnaires — including this one — use self-report items: short statements about everyday reactions and habits, rated on a frequency scale. There's no answer key to get "right"; your responses are simply compared against typical patterns to estimate where you fall across each emotional intelligence competency.
What Your Score Means
Your results break down into three emotional intelligence competencies: self-awareness (how well you notice and understand your own emotional states), empathy (how accurately you read and respond to what others are feeling), and social skills (how you put that understanding into practice in everyday interactions). A higher score in an area suggests it's a relative strength; a lower one points to where paying closer attention might help — not a fixed limit on how you can grow.
